Welcome to Honors U.S. History. Below is the syllabus for the class. We will try to stay as close to it as we can.

First Six Weeks      Chapter 3 – The Civil War and Reconstruction

                                           Chapter 4 – Settling the West

                                           Chapter 5– Indusrtialization

                                           Chapter 6 – Urban America  
                                           Daily notes, lectures, and discussions.
                                           Exams on Chapters 3, 4, 5, and 6.
                                           Select a book and begin to read for the American
                                           Biography Unit.

Second Six Weeks  Chapter 7 – Becoming a World Power

                                            Chapter 8 – The Progressive Movement

                                            Chapter 9 – World War I and Its Aftermath
                                            Daily notes, lectures, and discussions.
                                            Exams on Chapters 7, 8, and 9.
                                            Oral and written presentation on book
                                            for the American Biography Unit.
                                            Mini-research project on some aspect of World War I.

Third Six Weeks     Chapter 10 – The Jazz Age

                                            Chapter 11– The Great Depression Begins

                                            Chapter 12 – Roosevelt and the New Deal 
                                                                  (Semester Exam)

                                            Daily notes, lectures, and discussions
                                            Exams on chapters 10, 11, and 12. Mini-research
                                            project on causes of the Great Depression. (2 sources)
                                            Movie project in Windows movie maker on above.

Fourth Six Weeks   Chapter 13– A World in Flames

                                            Chapter 14- America and World War II

                                            Chapter 15 – The Cold War Begins

                                            Chapter 16 – Post War America

                                            Daily notes, lectures, and discussions
                                            Exams on chapters 13, 14, 15, and 16
                                            Read and report on a piece of teacher-
                                            approved historical fiction from the 20th century.
                                            Short paper with references on why
                                            World War II occurred.

Fifth Six Weeks        Chapter 17–The New Frontier and the Great Society

                                            Chapter 18-The Civil rights Movenment

                                            Chapter 19 – The Vietnam War

                                            Chapter 20 – The Politics of Protest

                                            Daily notes, lectures, and discussions
                                            Exams on chapters 17, 18, 19, and 20
                                            Collect 5 political cartoons from the period 
                                            between 1950 and 1973.Use electronic research
                                            and consult several different databases.
                                            Be prepared to explain the point of each cartoon

 

Sixth Six Weeks       Chapter 21 – Politics and Economics

                                            Chapter 22 – Resurgence of Conservitism

                                            Chapter 23 – A Time of Change

                                            Chapter 24- A New Century Begins

                                            Daily notes, lectures, and discussion.
                                            Exams on chapters 21, 22, 23, and 24
                                            Write a personal narrative about an historical 
                                            this year.  Determine how it will affect the future
                                            for Americans.Write a short paper on an
                                            American political figure, past or present,
                                            that you most admire.
